Newark Mourns Passing Of Sgt. Rafael Ramos, Jr., 59

Rafael Ramos, Jr., a Newark police sergeant died on Tuesday, Jan. 16, following an illness, the city announced on Facebook.

Ramos joined the Newark Police Division in Feb. 1991 and was promoted to sergeant in 2022, Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka and Public Safety Director Fritz G. Fragé said. 

He initially patrolled the West Ward and later served as a liaison to the U.S. Marshal Service and also worked in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Precincts, the Fugitive Apprehension Team, the Office of Professional Standards, Baraka and Fragé said. He last served in the Crime Scene Unit, Baraka and Fragé said

“Sergeant Ramos faithfully served the City of Newark for the past 33 years,” Baraka said. “That impressive length of service reflects a lifetime of dedication to the people of the City of Newark."

Fragé said Ramos was a highly respected supervisor who always maintained a humble demeanor.

“The passing of Sergeant Ramos has pierced the hearts of both active and retired colleagues,” Fragé said.
